Johannes Mager
Trombonist Johannes Mager graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1973. While at the Conservatory he helped establish the New Music Ensemble, which toured Europe and Scandinavia in 1972 as well as playing numerous local performances. At the same time he also began performing free-form musical and theatrical improvisation. In 1973 he formed Suono Della Fontana, an avant-garde trio specializing in music written in graphic notation, which toured Europe in 1974 and recorded for Wergo records. Johannes also played with the Oakland Symphony, S.F. Spring Opera, Port Costa Players, the Lamplighters and the avant-garde chamber group the Arch Ensemble. Under the name Ghost Opera Johannes gave his own performances of free-form musical/theatrical improvisation. He also taught the art of free-form improvisation as a faculty member at Lone Mountain College from 1975-78. From 1979-1990 Johannes performed exclusively with the Brass Band, a comedy brass quintet that performed worldwide. In 1991 the Brass Band went on hiatus and he began pursuing alternative musical expression with Process and others .
Disregarding the old adage that real musicians have day jobs, Johannes has been keeping busy with a wide variety of musical endeavors, especially paying gigs. He hasn't been showing up to Process rehearsals with any consistency since 1997, but the remaining band members still fondly recall the way he would dump the saliva from his trombone onto the studio carpet.
